February 2015 Association Minutes

A luncheon was served to approximately 81 members plus 8 non-eating members.

Program: Vice-President and Program Chair, James Griesen, introduced David Landis, Director of Urban Development and Planning for the City of Lincoln. He described the city’s efforts for renewal using the TIF approach for improving the quality of the inner city environment resulting in a greater tax base that supports educational and other local improvement efforts. Before and after photos demonstrated the considerable impact this process has made on the Lincoln quality of life. A question and answer period followed. Mr. Landis was presented with an Emeriti mug as a thank you for his interesting program.

Business Meeting. Duane Eversoll, president, convened the business meeting at 12:35 pm.

  1. Members were reminded that Meeting Minutes and Treasurer’s Reports are on the website.
  2. Agnes Adams has resigned as Treasurer; Jack Goebel reported the organization is solvent. At least one thousand dollars has been contributed so far by Emeriti to support

    the effort to host the Big X Retiree Association Conference in 2016. Contributions are still being invited.

  3. John Bernthal, reported the planning for the Big X Retiree’s Conference for 2016 is proceeding with a theme of “Programming for Healthy, Wealthy, and Wise Retirement.” The date, hotel, and sharing sessions have been planned as well as tours and other activities.
  4. Bob Diffendal has resigned as Senate Liaison, so if anyone has interest in this position, please contact Duane Eversoll.
  5. Kay Rockwell reported the Membership Relations Committee is planning an event for the spring on March 26, 2105, 9:30 am. It will be a tour of the new Outdoor Adventure Center, located at the NE corner of 14th and “W” Streets; RSVP’s are required.
  6. The Emeriti Coffee Chats are held once a month. Details for March will be coming in email or contact Nancy Aden at naden1@unl.edu
  7. Jim Griesen announced the next Emeriti Meeting will be March 17, 2015 at 11:30 am at East Campus Union with a St. Patrick’s theme. Tom Westphal will provide music and Donal Burns, a genuine Irishman, will speak on “The Real St. Patrick.” The April Emeriti Meeting will be relocated to the Innovation Campus and will involve a catered lunch. A reminder will be sent. He reminded that his phone number on the yellow card is incorrect; it should be 402-489-8393 or jgriesen1@unl.edu.
  8. Peter Levitov invited participation in the International Discussion Group which is held the first Wednesday of the Month, 3:00-4:30 pm, at Stauffer’s Café on south 48th Street. It is co-sponsored with OLLI. Contact plevitov2@unl.edu.
