October 2013 Board Minutes Wick Alumni Center

Members Present: Agnes Adams, Allen Blezek, John Comer, Duane Eversoll, Doug Jose, Jim Kendrick, Roger Kirby, Bob Kuzelka, Kay Rockwell, Delivee Wright, Doug Zatechka and Andrea Cranford.

Allen Blezek, President, called the meeting to order at 1:00 pm.

l. September meeting conflicts were discussed to determine future actions. Agnes Adams moved and Roger Kirby seconded a motion to discontinue the September meeting and delay the first member luncheon meeting until October. Motion passed.

2. Memory Moments: Allen Boetcher, Cooperative Extension; Dennis Bormann, Speech Communications; Richard Lonsdale, Geography; James McShane, English; Dick Thien, Journalism; Nelson Potter, Jr., Philosophy; Sam Treves, Geology; Emily Trickey widow of Richard Trickey, and Ruth Hayes widow of Dale Hayes.

3. Andrea Cranford, Alumni Association, reported on the following activities:
*Distribution of the Alumni Association’s 2014 calendar and recent Nebraska magazine;
*Guidelines for Alumni Awards nominations for 2014 that are due November 1, 2013;
*Homecoming events success; thirty alumni chapters; and Football Fridays;
*Tours available on a red golf cart to see changes; led by Vi Schroeder (call
to request in advance).

4. Nominations for Fall Election members were reported including:
President Elect (VP and Program Chair) - Duane Eversoll, School of Natural Resources
Board Member to replace Duane - Julie Johnson Child, Youth, and Family Studies.
A second Board Member will be needed to replace Bob Kuzelka who completes his term this year. Several names were suggested and will be contacted; however, the ultimate decision will be delegated to the Executive Committee.
Doug Zatechka moved and John Comer seconded a motion to vacate the Faculty Senate Liaison position vacated with the death of Jim McShane.

5. 2013 Big Ten Retirees Association Annual Meeting/Conference at the University of Michigan. John Comer reported the theme was “Purposeful Retirement”. He distributed a written report and suggested that the short time limits what is possible for purposes of our planning for 2016. Next year Rutgers University and University of Minnesota will join. The Purdue supplemental insurance benefit may be expanded to other institutions. University of Iowa has two organizations; one for all retirees and one for Emeriti that could be a model for us. Some produce newsletters. Jack Goebel also attended and may have further additions.

6. Treasurer’s Report. Agnes Adams distributed a report on expenditures May 1-September 30. Her report was accepted.

7. Membership Report. Roger Kirby reports 376 emeriti on the e-mail list including 103 Life Members; 23 spouse members. Fifteen emeriti paid in 2010 but not since; these people will be moved to inactive files unless they respond to a mailing reminding them of this. E-mail reminders were sent to 205 members for 2014. (AROHE recommends a letter from the President by USPS.) Agnes Adams moved and Duane Eversoll seconded a motion for the President to send a letter and a follow-up e-mail to 205 plus 61 members represented in Roger’s report, reminding them to renew.

We are awaiting a new updated list of New Emeriti as there were 31 in September who will receive a complementary first year membership.

8. Member Relations Report: Bob Kuzelka, reported Coffee Chats will continue monthly with venues to be announced.

9. Committee Chairs should be prepared to make appropriate reports to the members
at the October Luncheon Meeting.

10. Board Members are asked to read the Bylaws before the next meeting.
