November 2015 Board Minutes Wick Center

Members Present: John Comer, Duane Eversoll, Jack Goebel, Jim Griesen, Jeff Keown, Roger Kirby, Al Seagren, Delivee Wright, Doug Zatechka.

Duane Eversoll, President, called the meeting to order at 1:00 pm.

  1. Memory Moments:
    • Dorothy Johnson, spouse of Johnson, Engineering
    • Morris Schneider, Engineering
    • Lois Schwab, Home Economics
  2. Treasurer’s Report. Jack Goebel reported the Association is solvent.
    • Balances were:
      • Checking at Wells Fargo: $7,360.40
      • Wisherd Spendable: 17,372.42
      • Emeriti Fund: 8,973.00
      • Big X Fund: 1,720.00
    • The October luncheon meeting was near parity with income paying for most of the food bill.
    • Jack requested $3000.00 be moved into the checking account from the Spendable Wisherd Funds and $150 from the Big X Fund. John Comer moved, and Al Seagren seconded a motion to make these moves. Motion passed.
    • After discussion, it was decided to continue the freeze on Wisherd grants.
    • Roger Kirby moved and Jeff Keown seconded a motion that only in rare circumstances would grant funds be provided to people in great financial need. Motion passed.
  3. Results of Fall Elections.
    • Julie Johnson has been elected Vice-President and Program Chair, and Rita Kean has been elected for a three year term on the Board.
    • Since Rita will be serving as the Secretary of the Board, Al Seagren moved, and Jeff Keown seconded a motion that the President can make appointments as appropriate for either Board member replacements or committee chairs/members. Motion passed. It was suggested that we review the Policies and Practices document and adjust it as appropriate.
  4. Big Ten Retiree Organization Conference, August 2016.
    • Jim Griesen reported the committee would meet November 17th after the next Emeriti Luncheon meeting.
  5. Ad hoc Committee on Broadening UNL Emeriti.
    • Jack Goebel, Jim Griesen (Chair), Al Seagren, and Del Wright are members of this committee which has met and identified two approaches: (a) Lead in forming a new umbrella organization including all UNL retirees. (b) Expand those eligible for membership in the present Emeriti Association.
  6. Programs for 2016.
    • Julie Johnson has sent Board members a tentative list of programs for Spring 2016. Comments should be sent to Julie. She also forwarded a list of program ideas for the Big X Retirees Conference for John Bernthal, Chair. A draft of the “yellow card” program announcement for Spring 2016 was also distributed for feedback.
  7. Newsletter and Webpage.
    • John Comer reported the web page is being reviewed for corrections. A message and photo for the President-elect, James Griesen, is needed for the page. It will be updated by January 2016. Newsletters should be shared with other Big X Retiree’s Associations.
  8. Retreat.
    • The annual Emeriti Board Retreat will be held December 10, 2016, in the East Campus Union at 11:30 am with a luncheon followed by in-depth discussions. Doug Zatechka will arrange with the Union and Jim Griesen will get participant numbers so we don’t overpay for meals.
  9. November Member Meeting and Luncheon will be
    • November 17, 2015, at 11:30 am in the East campus union. Prof. Emeritus Richard A. Dienstbier will present a program on “Building Resistance to Stress and Aging: The Toughness Model. “ Presently, 77 people have reservations.
  10. Committee Reports
    • Benefits.
      • Doug Zatechka, Chair, reported he and Rita Kean will work on arrangements for luncheons for Fall 2016.
    • Membership.
      • Roger Kirby reported he will send dues notices soon; first via email, then follow-up if necessary. Dues are $200 for Life Memberships; $25 for three years; or $10 for one year. These amounts need to be reviewed. Jim Griesen moved and Jeff Keown seconded a motion to invite President Hank M. Bounds to become a collegial member of the UNL Emeriti Association. Motion passed. Jim will send the letter of invitation. A problem with AOL users occurs with mass mailings so they must be sent individually.
Member Relations. Coffee House Chats.
  1. November Coffee House Chat & Fall Tour is a Special Activity celebrating Behind the Scenes Maintenance that impacted Emeriti’s teaching, research and extension careers on campus. Meet Thursday, November 19th, at the Recreation & Wellness Center on East Campus (1717 N.35th Street) at 9:30 am for coffee and tete-a-tete. Grab breakfast or a snack along with your drink at the full service Bistro at the entrance to the building.
  2. Thank you to Gary and Karen Heusel for hosting the October Emeriti Halloween Party.
  3. UNL Emeriti Holiday Celebration will be Wednesday, December 16th at 9:30 am, at the home of Kay and Lee Rockwell, hosts, 2101 South 66th Street. Bring a treat to share.
Faculty Senate Liaison.
  • Jeff Keown reported that Chancellor Perlman spoke at the last Senate meeting on the Nebraska Bookstore use, and on renovations being requested for both campuses. They also discussed the need for parking for women nearer campus buildings as a security consideration.
Emeriti Oral History Project.
  • In the absence of Doug Jose, Duane Eversoll requested suggestions for Emeriti who should be interviewees in the future. A list of those already interviewed is on the web page.
