Visitors were noted from Romania, Canada, and the Ukraine. Some visitors used search engines to find us; Google, Yahoo, and Ask Jeeves were the most popular.

The top five attractions were: Calendar, Look & Listen, Meeting Minutes, Board Members, and Board Minutes.

Added during the quarter was a Look & Listen tab that permits Emeriti to see and hear the speakers that addressed Association meetings Two techniques are provided; Streaming which means you watch the speakers while you are at your computer and connected to the internet, and Video Podcasting where a file is downloaded from the internet and then placed on a portable device about the size of a small cell phone. This latter technology permits viewing the speakers whenever one wants, wherever one happens to be.

/////////////////////////////////////////////
February 2006

Usage was lower in February than in January.

Sixty-nine different individuals visited our website with 94 total visits. They looked at 856 pages with the list of Members, Board Minutes, Look & Listen, Calendar, and FAQ being the five most popular pages in February.

Look & Listen was a new Tab added to the Website. This permits members to watch the presentations of speakers that have addressed Association meetings. The technique is Streaming where you watch the program while you are connected to the internet. This additions will provide added value to those members that were unable to physically attend our meetings or simply want to watch again the presentations.

October 2005 Committee Report

Status:

I believe that the Emeriti Association Website is fully operational.

The only Tabs with no content are: Old Treasurer Reports, Membership Committee Report, and the Nominating Committee Report.

Thoughts:

The Membership report might contain periodic updates on the number of emeriti, association members, new emeriti, etc. similar to the data I emailed to the Officers and Committee Chairs on 21 September.

Perhaps the Nominating Committee Report Tab serves no purpose and should be deleted. If the Board adopts absentee balloting, then a new first-order Tab named Ballots could be added.

Those Committees that have posted reports should be sure that newer reports are added to previous reports rather than replacing them.

Website Usage Statistics:

In late August I have asked for, and CIT has established, a monitoring system for the Emeriti Website. Data is collected on who (by ISP, i.e., altell.net is an ISP) came to at our website, when (by time, and day) they visited the website, what pages (tabs) they looked at, and how long they were on the site.

Data is collected continuously but reported only on a weekly basis. Such data could be used by the Board as a management tool when considering changes to the website. Other, and much finer details are recorded that are of interest only to a few. For example, A Google robot (among others) looks at the website often. Thus, if you go to Google and type in “unl emeriti” as the search term and then click on the “I’m feeling lucky” tab you will go directly to our website. Also among the minuscule details I note that a user from Norway, one from Canada, and one from the Netherlands stumbled onto our website during September.

An overview of the September 2005 data showed that:

  • There were 122 visits to the website, 88 were unique visitors, 13 of whom added our website to their “favorites” list. Admittedly, a number of the website visits were from me as I “messed around” with the list of Emeriti names and the Part D Medicare letter
  • 1064 pages (tabs) were viewed,
  • The average visit lasted 474 seconds, about 8 minutes. This is high because I was logged on as much as a half-hour a couple of times as I “played” with the membership tables, and other pages.
  • The top five Tabs (other than the home tab) were: 1) What’s New, 2) Benefits reports 3) minutes, 4) FAQs, and 5) list of emeriti and members.

I plan to report similar summary statistics on a monthly basis. I would be glad to provide the URL of the monitoring system to any Board member. Just send me an email.

7 April 2005

On Tuesday, 29 March, Committee members John Benson, Irv Omtvedt, and Jim Kendrick met with Lana Johnson and Al Stark from CIT to go over the Emeriti Website. Max Clegg was unable to attend. Dan Lutz, Walter Mientka, and Don Edwards were also invited to this meeting because they will be heavily involved in putting data into and maintaining the website. Unfortunately, none of them could attend.

A terse summary of our meeting is that the programming of the website is virtually complete, awaiting from us only the instructions on how we want the membership data base to be displayed

Other than that they turned the website over to us to do with it what we want. Lana provided a demonstration of how we could:

  • Input text and pictures,
  • Change the name of, or add categories and subcategories,
  • Establish links to anything on the web,
  • Edit any text on the website including changing any format, and
  • Do a lot of other things--and no doubt many things we haven't thought of yet.

So, the ball in now firmly in our court, awaiting only our will to use it. Obviously, those who will be inputting data need to gain experience. Further, the Board needs to establish procedures on who will be authorized to input data into the website, and how we decide what changes need to be made to the website now, and in the future. The Committee might take leadership in making suggestions to the Board on these

The Committe believes that Max Clegg should be the main contact point for liaison with CIT and for training Emeriti Officers and Committee Chairs on inputting and maintenance data into the Emeriti Website. Max should also be the one mainly responsible for changing the "look and feel" of the site. Jim Kendrick will assist Max in these assignments.
