October 2015 Board Minutes Wick Center

Members Present: Duane Eversoll, Jack Goebel, Jim Griesen, Julie Johnson, Doug Jose, Rita Kean, Jeff Keown, Roger Kirby, Al Seagren, Delivee Wright, Doug Zatechka.

Duane Eversoll, President, called the meeting to order at 1:00 pm.

  1. Andrea Cranford provided a handout listing 2015 Masters Week honorees and the schedule of activities on November 4, 2015.
  2. Memory Moments:

    Neil L. Munson, Curriculum and Instruction

    Eugene Merchant, Dentistry

    Jayne Wade Anderson, Greek Affairs

    Judy Wendorff, International Affairs

  3. Treasurer’s Report. In Jack Goebel reported that all outstanding bills have been paid.
  4. Big Ten Retiree Organization Conference, August, 2016. The Arrow Bus lines will be used for the campus tour. Marjorie Kostelnik, Dean of Education and Family Sciences, will provide funds for one coffee and will provide canvas bags for attendees. She had several helpful suggestions for program elements including: a reception or donner at the International Quilt Study Center; engaging Pippa white for her rendition related to Nebraska Imigrants; and I-2 (a choir comprised of handicapped individuals). Dean Plowman, College of Business Administration, will support the conference with $500-$600. No report yet from Arts and Sciences.

    Results of the survey from Michigan State University will be used for adjustments in the program; i.e., building organizational strengths on our own campuses.

  5. Election of Officers. Information on nominations for President-Elect and Board Member was sent via email in September. At the October meeting, if there are no additions, Julie Johnson will be announced as President-Elect, and Rita Kean as the new Board Member.
  6. Newsletter Update. Julie Johnson reported Peter Levitov will do a photo and an article about the International Interest Group for the Spring Newsletter. January 1, 2016, will be the deadline for that issue, and August 1, 2016, for the fall issue. Julie distributed guidelines for length of articles for future newsletters.
  7. Ad hoc Committee on Broadening UNL Emeriti. Jack Goebel, Jim Griesen (Chair), Al Seagren, and Del Wright are members of this committee which has not yet met.
  8. Coffee House Chats. Information will be distributed by email for coming events.
  9. Secretary. Delivee Wright will be stepping down as Secretary the first of January so a new secretary will be appointed.

  10. Committee Reports

    Benefits. Doug Zatechka, Chair, reported the value of UNL phone/data discounts and distributed the list of UNL Emeriti Benefits. This is also available on the web page. Need to suggest members look at these in either the newsletter or with request for dues payment.

    Membership. Roger Kirby reported he will send dues notices November 1, 2015.

    Faculty Senate Liaison. Jeff Keown will serve in this role.

  11. October Luncheon Meeting. Tuesday, October 20, 2015, NU President Hank M. Bounds will speak on “The Challenges and Opportunities Facing the University of Nebraska,” at 11:30 am, East Campus Union. Jim Griesen reported 105 reservations have been made; and no complaints received on the cost increase to $15.00.
  12. Next Board Meeting. 1:00 pm, Tuesday, November 10, 2015, Wick Center.
