November 2014 Board Minutes Wick Center

Members Present: Allen Blezek, John Comer, Bob Diffendal, Jack Goebel, Jim Griesen, Julie Johnson, Roger Kirby, Kay Rockwell, Al Seagren, Delivee Wright, Doug Zatechka.

John Comer, President, called the meeting to order at 1:00 pm.

1. Andrea Cranford reported that the Alumni Association is sponsoring "Master's Week" next week, and since it is the 50th Anniversary, former recipients of this honor are also being invited.  She distributed information on these events.

2. Memory Moments:
Harry Allen, Institutional Research and Planning;
W. Neal Baxter, Extension Agriculture;
Francis Belohlavy, Conservation and Survey;
Harold Mosher, spouse of Beverly Mosher, Teaching, Learning & Teaching Education;
Katharine Riddle, Extension Division;
Herbert F. Schliesser, Speech & Hearing Clinic and Dept. of Speech and Dramatic Arts; and
Dale Swartzendruber, Agronomy and Horticulture;

3. Treasurer's Report.   Jack Goebel reported that Agnes Adams is home from rehabilitation.  A potential assistant Treasurer has been identified.

4. Big Ten Retiree Organization Conference 2016.  No significant change at this time. Jack Goebel reported $320 has been donated so far, and reminded that the Board had voted to support this effort by their contributions.  Kay Rockwell reported that the Faculty Women's Club will host a similar conference for Women's Clubs in 2018 and would be interested in learning about our planning processes.

5.  Committee Reports
a. Benefits Committee.   Doug Zatechka , Chair, reported no changes.

b. Faculty Senate. Bob Diffendal, Liaison, reported the following issues in the Senate:
Best practices in course scheduling for student access; new information will come out Nov 17th on UNL risk assessment; Executive Committee was unaware of the functions of the Intercollegiate Athletics Commission representative; faculty membership on Corporation Boards will be studied.

c. Membership:  Roger Kirby, Chair, will send reminder letters for those owing dues.

d. Member Relations:  Kay Rockwell, Chair, reported a Halloween Party was held at Gail and Jeff Keown's home on October 30, 2014.  She shared photos of the event.    A Christmas Party will be held at her home on December 11th, 9:30 am.

Also, an event to learn more about 3-D printing is scheduled and is almost full. A spring event will be planned after the December Board Retreat.  It was suggested that we try to hold an Association meeting at innovative campus.  Kay asked that any photos taken at Emeriti events be sent to her for possible use in a new brochure.

e. Wisherd Committee.  Al Seagren, Chair, reported that one request had been received, but since grants had been discontinued until finances improve, it was not recommended for funding.  Clarification of the purpose of Wisherd Funds was requested and Del Wright was asked to find minutes detailing the Foundation Representative's past guidance on this.  This is a topic for the December retreat.

f. Web Site.  John Comer reported that the Web site has been updated; future changes may be handled by "University Communications."  An occasional newsletter is also being considered.
The Annual Emeriti Board Retreat will be held at 11:30 am to 2:20 pm at the East Campus Union on December 9, 2014.  Doug Zatechka will make arrangements for 12.

The next Emeriti Meeting is Thursday, November 20, 2014.  Dr. Shane Farritor, Professor, Mechanical and Materials Engineering, College of Engineering at UNL will present a program on "Surgical Robots Being Developed at the University of Nebraska."
