November 2013 Board Minutes Wick Alumni Center
Members Present: Agnes Adams, Allen Blezek, John Comer, Duane Eversoll, Doug Jose, Jim Kendrick, Bob Kuzelka, Al Seagren, Delivee Wright, Doug Zatechka and Andrea Cranford.
Allen Blezek, President, called the meeting to order at 1:00 pm.
1. Memory Moments: none were reported this month.
2. Andrea Cranford, Alumni Association, thanked the Emeriti Association for helping to publicize the event as well as those who participated in the Richard Boohar Scholarship Event. She also invited participation in the Masters’ Week Reception to be held at the Champions’ Club 7:00 pm, Wednesday, November 13, 2013. A list of honorees was
distributed. Next year will be the fiftieth anniversary of the Masters’ Week Celebration.
3. Treasurer’s Report. Agnes Adams, Treasurer, reported the current financial status (see attached report) and her report was accepted. Bob Kuzelka moved and Al Seagren seconded a motion to request three thousand dollars ($3000) from the Wisherd Fund for expected expenses for Spring 1914. Motion Passed.
Al Seagren reported that he will not be using the grant he received and will be returning the funds to the Emeriti Association.
4. Spring Luncheons, 2014. Duane Eversoll reported on the programs and dates scheduled as follows:
January 16 – “Nebraska Landslides” by Duane Eversoll, Retired Research Geologist, Conservation and Survey Division, School of Natural Resources, UNL.
February 18 – “Planning for Drought and the Consequences of Global Warming” by
Don Wilhite, Professor and Ex-Director, School of Natural Resources, UNL.
March 20 – “Status of Nebraska Bridges—In Light of all Recent Collapses in other States” by Mark Traynowicz, Bridge Engineer at the Nebraska Department of Roads.
April 17 – “Science Behind the New Beef Cuts” by Chris Calkins, Professor of Animal Science, IANR, UNL.
5. Fall Election will occur at the Member Luncheon Meeting on November 20, 2014. Nominees are: President Elect (VP and Program Chair) - Duane Eversoll, School of Natural Resources; and Board Member to replace Duane - Julie Johnson Child, Youth, and Family Studies; and Board Member to replace outgoing Bob Kuzelka - Roger Kirby, Physics and Astronomy.
6. 2016 Big Ten Retirees Association Annual Meeting/Conference at the University of Nebraska. Jack Goebel, who was out of town, sent a report that planning is on track and the hotel location should be determined soon. Duane Eversoll has been asked to sit-in on planning meetings with the Executive Committee.
7. Membership Report. Roger Kirby, Chair, sent a report on having sent 265 letters from the President to those who had not renewed memberships plus 206 email reminders. As a result, 75 renewals have come in so far plus 6 new life members and 19 one-year memberships. He recommends that keeping non-renewals on the mailing list for three years after the last dues were paid is worthwhile. The personal letter also seemed desirable.
8. Board Retreat/Lunch will be held Thursday, December 5, 2013, at 11:30 am at Wick Alumni Center.
Topics for discussion will include:
a. Big X Retiree Conference in 2016.
b. Long-term finances of the organization and seeking long-term donors as well as short-term sponsors.
c. Relations with UNL Alumni Association
d. IRS status for the UNL Emeriti Association.
e. Brainstorming Additional Benefits for UNL Emeriti Members.
f. Brainstorming How to involve more members in activities of the organization.
g. Additional activities for Emeriti vs keeping as it is.
h. Committee Chairs for 2014 (John Comer).
i. Other possible topics might include: a list of 2013 activities; managing useable income for better returns; AROHE web page with ideas of activities; Wisherd Fund review; relationship to UNL.
7. Member Relations Report: Bob Kuzelka, reported on recent events (Nine-mile Prairie Tour; Dairy Tour; Halloween Party) and announced a Friday,9:30 am December 13, 2013, Holiday Party at the Home of Jeff and Gail Keown. Details to follow. Announcement will be made at the November Luncheon Meeting.
