Minutes of Association Meetings October 20, 2009 At 11:30 a.m., President Lowell Moser introduced Program Chair Herb Howe, who introduced the speaker, Lily Hans, Co-coordinator of Lincoln TRIAD, who discussed “Preventing Crimes and Promoting Safety of Older Citizens.” She distributed pamphlets on “Scams-Fraud-Abuse: Don’t Become a Victim,” “Seniors Against Crime – Lancaster County,” and a form for seniors to keep information up to date on emergency contacts, medical data, list of medications, known medical conditions, allergies and medical insurance. At 12:30 p.m. President Moser called the business meeting to order. About 45 members and guests were present. A moment of silence was observed for Don Gregory (English) longtime advisor for General Studies students, who was known by most members. Minutes of the September 24 membership meeting, compiled by Assistant Secretary Delivee Wright, were approved as posted. The treasurer’s report presented by Walter Mientka was accepted with no changes. Old Business Officer nominations: No additional nominations were offered. Dan Wheeler has been nominated as president-elect. Jerry Petr has been nominated for a 3-year term as a board member. The slate of officers was approved by acclamation. Wisherd Memorial Project: The effort to raise at least $700 to finance placement of a headstone in Wyuka Cemetery for the grave of Zelma Wisherd has been successful. A stone will now be ordered Emeriti in Action Project: The UNL Emeriti Assn, in cooperation with UNL Libraries, will host a library exhibit in the spring of 2010. The purpose of the exhibit is to display activities that have been carried out by UNL Emeriti since they achieved emerita/us status. Twenty-six entries have been received so far. The deadline for submitting exhibits to Bob Fuller will be March 1, 2010. New Business Member Relations: Tice Miller. A tour of the attic in the Temple Building, which has a reputation as being haunted, is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on October 27. It may be scary, which fits in with Halloween, Miller noted. A maximum of 20 persons may participate. A new Emeriti Coffee was held at 9:30 a.m. October 19 at the Bread & Cup coffee house. Membership: Chairman Thornton reported no substantial change in numbers from a month ago. Website: Jim Kendrick not present. Faculty Senate Activities: Jim McShane. McShane has been away from Lincoln for a period of time, thus has not been in attendance at Faculty Senate meetings. The Wisherd Fund committee has been inactive in the recent past. Addition by McShane: A Faculty Senate Committee on which he has served had reported on academic freedom aspects of the Ayers Affair for the Senate. He reminded the members that a motion from the Emeriti Association had provoked the establishment of the Committee. He opened an opportunity for discussion, in case anyone had missed the published reports. Herb Howe reminded that “Prairie Fire” newspaper had carried a good article on this matter, written by Prof. Miles Bryant, who had chaired the Committee. The next Emeriti membership meeting will be held November 19 at the East Campus Union, beginning at 11:30 a.m. Speaker will be Carol McShane, president of the Nebraska Nursing Consultants, on the topic, “Slow Medicine.” There being no new or unfinished business, the meeting was adjourned. Respectfully submitted, Dan B. Lutz, secretary Click HERE to view old minutes |
