March 2016 Association Minutes East Campus Union

  1. Call to Order. Emeriti President James Griesen called the meeting to order at 12:00 pm.

  2. Memory Moments
    Griesen asked attendees to share a Memory Moment for the following persons:
    Beryle Irene Adams – wife of Charles H. Adams – Animal Science
    Walter Thaine Bagley- Forestry
    Mary Ellen Ahler Chambers Bodman- Interior Design
    Fred Holbert – Criminal Justice
    Robert M. (Bob) Koch – Animal Science
    Barbara A. Kuhn- Modern Languages
    Marley Tobian- Dental Hygiene

  3. Treasurer’s Report. Treasurer Jack Goebel reported the Association is solvent; however, additional funding is needed for the Big 10 Conference in August 2016.

  4. Member Relations. Kay Rockwell (see Attachment A) reminded the Board of the April 7 Coffee (9:30 am, Recreation and Wellness Center on East Campus (1717 N. 35th Street) followed by a tour of the Biomedical & Obesity Research Core (BORC) Facility, Ruth Leverton Hall at 10:30 am.

  5. Volunteer Opportunities. Jim Griesen announced opportunities for Emeriti members to:

    • Serve at greeters at the Spring 2016 Graduate Commencement, Friday May 6 and/or the Undergraduate Commencement, Saturday, May 7. Those interested in serving at the Graduate Commencement on May 6 need to arrive at the Pinnacle Bank Arena by 1:00 pm and those interested in the Undergraduate Commencement on May 7 should arrive by 7:30 am for training. Volunteers will receive a premier parking pass that will allow access to the parking garage. Please let Jordan Gonzales, Assistant Director for Student Programs (jgonzales@huskeralum.org) know if interested.
    • Serve as volunteers/docents at the Morrill Hall Museum. Please let Sarah Feit, Volunteer/Docent Coordinator (sfeit2@unl.edu) know if interested.
  6. President Griesen thanked Doug Zatechka and John Comer for their efforts updating the Emeriti Benefits information on the Emeriti website.

  7. Future Programs. Vice President Julie Johnson noted that at each place setting there were two blank cards. She asked attendees to use one card to identify Emeriti faculty that might be featured in future newsletters and a second card to indicate their ideas for future luncheon programs. The cards were collected following the luncheon.

    Johnson reminded attendees that Chancellor Perlman is the featured speaker for the April 21, 2016 Emeriti luncheon at the East Campus Union. Perlman will offer reflections on his tenure at Chancellor of UNL.

  8. Luncheon Program. VP Johnson introduced the speaker for today’s luncheon program.

    Christopher Neale. Research Director. Robert B. Daugherty Water for Food Institute located at the University of Nebraska Innovation Campus
    Challenges for Managing Water and Food Security

    Both VP Johnson and President Griesen thanked Dr. Neale.

  9. The meeting was adjourned at 1:05 pm.
