OLD BUSINESS

1. Web Site. Jim Kendrick, Jack Goebel, Dan Wheeler, and Herb Howe met with the administration regarding migrating the Emeriti Association site to the UNL server. They will provide assistance for this adjustment. It will look very much the same as the present site and will be seamless to members. Jack Goebel moved, and Jim McShane seconded a motion to accept the recommendation to move the site to the UNL server.

2. Emeriti in Service The Big Event. Herb Howe reported that the Emeriti Association members will be invited to participate in the April 9, 2011, Big Event in collaboration with the Student planned activities. Emeriti will need to register online as an Emeriti Association volunteer for that Saturday, 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. This will be announced at the February 17, 2011, Emeriti meeting.

Jack Goebel suggested another volunteer project for Emeriti by helping the Alumni Association with plant care of the garden. It was decided to add this idea to the agenda for the Feb. 17th member meeting, and invite those interested to sign up.

3. New Emeriti. Dan and Herb met with Evelyn Jacobson regarding the April 21, 2011, Celebration for faculty who are retiring this year. It is unlikely that the program will be substantive in regard to the transition to retirement. It was suggested that the UC-Davis brochure, Steps in Retirement, be adapted for UNL in cooperation with Greg Claytons work in this area.. A list of those who have retired since January 1, 2011, was circulated so Board members could identify faculty to personally contact with invitations to participate in the Emeriti Association. A welcoming event for those retiring this summer cannot be planned until we have more information and names of retirees.

Jack Goebel reported that we are still waiting for a decision from the Systems Office regarding the addition of a checkbox on retirement PAFs that would call for an explicit decision by the department regarding the assignment of the Emeritus/a status to retiring faculty, and verified by the department chair. Jack will check on the status of this request.

4. Publicity Chair. Dan Wheeler reported that he had not found someone to be in charge of Emeriti publicity.

NEW BUSINESS

1. Surviving Spouse Benefits. There is need to inform surviving spouses that they are spousal members of the association and are invited to participate in our activities without paying dues..

COMMITTEE REPORTS

1. Benefits: Jack Goebel reported no changes.

2. Membership: Mel Thornton, Chair, sent a report as of February 4, 2011:

100 Annual Members; 183 Life Members; 28 new 2010 members; 22 new 2011 members; 136 spousal members; with a total of 441 with 113 not yet paying dues. Discussion of how we should contact non-dues paying members resulted in a recommendation that we send hard copy reminders to 113 people who otherwise will be switched to inactive status. This is the first year we have relied solely on email reminders. Agnes Adams will prepare a form letter inviting them to stay active, and we will seek clerical assistance to prepare envelopes.

3. Member Relations: Bob Kuzelka reported a letter was needed for new 2011 Emeriti inviting them to membership (free the first year) and requesting current and/or alternate email addresses for contact. A welcoming event will be planned after we learn what Human Resources is planning.

Bob circulated a possible feedback questionnaire regarding kinds of field trips that would be of interest. It was suggested that it be simplified into a few broad categories of types of trips.

4. Oral History Project. Tice Miller reported that he and Jim Kendrick had conducted two new interviews this month. Jack Goebel was interviewed by Herb Howe, with an audience of about fifty people. Jim McShane interviewed Paul Olson, English, and this also was a successful interview. The Library would like to have one of these a month. Others are being planned.

4. UNL Senate: Jim McShane reported that the Senate has not acted regarding the appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs (VCAA) without a search.

5. Web Site: Jim Kendrick is working on getting materials updated.
