April 2014 Board Minutes Rm 115, Ruth Leverton Hall

Members Present: Allen Blezek, John Comer, Duane Eversoll, Julie Johnson, Doug Jose, Roger Kirby, Kay Rockwell, Ed Schmidt, Al Seagren, Delivee Wright, Doug Zatechka.

John Comer, President, called the meeting to order at 1:00 pm.

  1. Memory Moments:  Barbara (Bobbie) Allen, Spouse of Harold Allen, Continuing Education; Gordon A. Gallup, Chemistry and Physics; James M. May, Elementary Education; Glenn W. Peterson, Plant Pathology; Frank A. Smith, Conservation and Survey.

  2. Treasurer's Report.  No Report.

  3. John Comer reported exploring UNL Today as a medium for Emeriti news and visibility. Troy Fedderson, Editor of UNL Today (tfedderson@unl.edu) and Steve Smith, News Director, University Communications (ssmith13@unl.wsu) were receptive to the idea.  Members will be invited to volunteer to lead the organization of this initiative for the Association.  Fedderson or Smith will be invited to the May Board meeting to explore topics of interest.

  4. OLLI-Emeriti collaboration on an international discussion group will begin in September 2014.

  5. Committee Reports

    a. Doug Zatechka , Chair, reported spouses do not get parking after the Emeriti members has died.

    b. Member Relations. Kay Rockwell reported the results of an ad hoc committee to explore activity for this committee at the March meeting. She reported the discussion to the committee. Nancy Aden is organizing Coffee Chats.  Another activity of this committee has been organizing several tours or field trips for members (such as the new Brain Study Center, Five-mile Prairie, Dairy tour, Physics building, etc.).

    c. Faculty Senate. No Report.

    d. Membership Committee. No report.

    e. Big Ten 2016 Conference.  Al Seagren reported work on the budget for the conference with estimated cost at least $10,000 for banquet, reception, and transportation.

    f. Wisherd Committee. Al Seagren reported that grants are tabled until further planning for the conference is known.

    g. Web Site. In Jim Kendrick's absence, the site has not yet been updated. Ed Schmidt will learn the maintenance of the Emeriti Web site, but does not yet have access.

  6. The next Coffee Chat will be April 23, 2014, 9:30 am at the Crescent Moon Coffee House, below Ten Thousand Villages on the SE corner of 8th and P Streets, or if weather permits, across P. Street in the Courtyard.  It will be a celebration of Shakespeare's birthday..
    The May Coffee Chat will be at 9:30 am on May 21, 2014, same location.

  7. The next Luncheon Meeting is Thursday, April 17, 2014, in the East Campus Union.  The program is Chris Calkins, Professor of Animal Science, IANR, on the "Science Behind the New Cuts of Beef."

    The next Board meetings will be 1:00 pm, May 8, 2014, in 104 Home Economics.
